New Zealand’s greatest yachting legends and personalities will come together at 7pm on Saturday 17th October to join Lion New Zealand in celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the yachts heroic win of the 1984 Sydney to Hobart race. The race is said to have been one of the toughest Syndey to Hobart races ever, with only 46 of the 152 starters crossing the finish line. It also propelled a number of todays yacting heros into the limelight, many of who will be attending the glitzy cocktail evening. Yachting heroes such as Grant Dalton, Simon Gundry, Glen Sowry and Kevin Shoebridge, to name a few, with yachting commentator Peter Montgomery who was reporting from Lion in the 1984 race, will all be doning a tie and joining in the 25th anniversary celebrations at the Maritime Museum. A highlight of the evening will be the opportunity to bid in a charity auction for a crew place on Lion when it competes again, for the first time since its win 25 years ago, in the Sydney to Hobart race this year. In addition to the prospect of participating in the 2009 Sydney to Hobart race, there are also other amazing experiences to be auctioned with proceeds going to key supporter of Lion New Zealand, Lion Maritime Development Charitable Trust. Celebrating one of our favourite pastimes alongside one of our greatest victories, the 25th Anniversary of Lion New Zealand is a must attend occasion.
