The Kathmandu Moehau can only be described as one of the most spectacular challenges on the Multisport calendar and is set in the rugged Northern Coromandel Peninsula. It’s one of New Zealand’s best kept secrets and only 2-3 hours from Auckland.
The race is named after the highest point on the Coromandel Peninsula, Mount Moehau, 2,935 feet above the oceans that surround it. The Kathmandu Moehau comprises of three events: • The 114km Moehau Multisport Race • The 66km Little Moehau Multisport Race • The 54km Moehau Off Road Tri The Moehau Multisport races include Sea kayaking, off road running and mountain biking and the Moehau Off Road Tri includes a sea swim, mountain bike and off road run. This years sees a major change to the Moehau Multisport race with the Pacific Ocean kayak and final mountain bike ride being replaced with another mountain bike route and a 2nd kayak of the Hauraki Gulf. The race no longer requires sea kayaks for the 2nd kayak leg. The Moehau Multisport race is a unique chance to circumnavigate the Coromandel Peninsula following the coastline from Coromandel Township, through Port Charles, Port Jackson, Colville and back to Coromandel. The coastal run between Port Charles and Jackson must be one of the most beautiful runs in the country with views over to Great Barrier Island. The Little Moehau is shorter but an equally spectacular race that takes you into the shadow of the Moehau. This event is named after the 2nd slightly lower peak next to the Moehau. |
