Police praise neighbours who saved man run over by car in Hamilton domestic

A senior Hamilton Police officer is crediting neighbours for saving a man from serious injury after he was allegedly knocked down and driven over by his intoxicated partner in a domestic related incident in the City over the weekend.

Hamilton City Area Commander, Inspector Greg Nicholls said emergency services were called to the suburb of Fairfield about 12.35am on Sunday after reports of a violent domestic dispute.

"On arrival they found neighbours had intervened after a man, who had been drinking, was allegedly struck down and run over by his 42-year-old female partner not once- but four times.

"The couple had earlier been arguing and as a result of this the woman has used the vehicle as a weapon. Fortunately the man escaped serious injury and bystanders directly intervened, pulling the woman out of the car as she tried to run the man over a fifth time."

Mr Nicholls said the woman then fled the scene but was arrested a short time later.

Breath tested the woman returned a breath alcohol reading of over 980mgms, the legal adult alcohol limit is 400mgms.

"The neighbours' actions are commended by Police. Here they have seen something going on, assessed the situation and intervened preventing more serious injury.

"Police appreciate people taking assertive action to ensure the safety of members of their community but only when they do so without putting themselves or others at risk. It's what safer communities together is all about."

Arrested, the woman was charged with excess breath alcohol- third or subsequent offence, assaulting a person with a blunt instrument and careless driving.

The man was treated for minor injuries.
