The SMEG ‘50s retro fridge is an enduring design classic and seemingly almost impossible to improve upon… But for the second year a talented group of emerging designers will be asked to undertake that challenge, redesigning the Classic SMEG FAB28 into a modern work of art.

SMEG New Zealand Distributor and Managing Director Rachel Louie says the SMEG Art Design Competition last year resulted in some breath-taking, original design work and that it was a “no-brainer” to run it again in 2014.

“We had all kinds of entries, from the wacky to the wonderful,” says Louie. “It was a delight to see just how creative and innovative people could be and we cannot wait to see how an expanded group of young designers rise to the challenge,” she said.

Designers and design schools throughout the country have been invited to take part, designing initially on paper and then, if they make the final cut, actually creating their design on a FAB28 fridge itself. In addition to this recognition, the designer will receive their very own FAB28 from our standard colour range as a prize.
