Egg-citement in the Bay as world record broken!

It was all hands on deck today when 207 Bay of Plenty Polytechnic staff and students joined forces to break a Guinness World Record – for the ‘most people dipping egg soldiers simultaneously’.
With a standing record of only 178, the Polytechnic team cracked it wide open with their attempt. Student experience coordinator Kirsten Crossan was thrilled with the event, although somewhat bemused at all of the legalese around the record.
“A huge amount of organisation went into making today happen. From applying to break the record with Guinness World Records Limited six odd weeks ago, to ensuring we had all the right witnesses here and perfectly cooked eggs - so to see it all come together and so many excited staff and students was awesome,” said Kirsten.
“Right from the start we wanted to support animal welfare so it was important to us to use cage free eggs. At the recommendation of SPCA I approached Henergy Eggs who jumped on board and supplied the eggs for nothing, they have the SPCA Blue Tick!”
“Couplands Bakery in Gate Pa donated all the bread for ‘soldiers’, everyone was really keen to be involved and see our students have some fun. Our hospitality team cooked the eggs to perfection – and there’s nothing like some free food to motivate hungry students!”
The Polytechnic had lots of community support in order to meet the strict requirements from the Guinness Book of World Records – stewards and witnesses included Deputy Mayor Kelvin Clout, Penny Mitropoulos (Tauranga City Council), Richard Jenson and Jenna Heerdegen (Ronayne Hollister-Jones Lellman), Jeremy Sparrow (HOBEC Holland Beckett Lawyers), Lynda Lipiniski (University of Waikato), Brian Hamilton (JP), Environment BOP and ANZ Bank.
“It is great to see Bay of Plenty Polytechnic doing something a little quirky and fun, engaging both students and staff,” said Kelvin Clout (still smiling despite the egg dripping from his face via an overly-exuberant student). “Well done to all for an egg-ceptional world record!”
Also on hand to add to the fun were live music performances from the Polytechnic’s Diploma in Music students as well as local radio stations, The Edge and ZM.
“The Edge was stoked to be part of yet another successful world record attempt – it’s the second in Tauranga that we’ve been part of in the past 12 months,” said Jordan Milligan, MC and The Edge promo coordinator. “Our listeners and The Edge team had an absolute blast!”
But it’s not all over yet. The Polytechnic need to send off their video, witness statements and photographic evidence and wait with fingers crossed and bated breath for the final verdict from London whether they’ve made it into the Guinness World Records. Watch this space for an egg-cellent result!
