Eruption to Have Minimal Impact on Kiwi Travel

Kiwis with plans to travel to the northern hemisphere are unlikely to have their travel affected by the recent eruption of the Bardarbunga volcano in Iceland.

Local travel agency, House of Travel says it is monitoring the after-effects from today’s eruption and is keeping passengers advised of any new volcanic activity and its impact on their travel plans.

The volcano started showing signs of activity in mid-August, and the risk level for the aviation industry is currently at the highest level.

The Eyjafjallajokull volcano, also in Iceland, erupted in 2010 and produced an ash cloud that severely disrupted European airspace and caused delays for hundreds of thousands of travellers.

However, Brent Thomas from House of Travel says Kiwis are unlikely to be affected by the potential eruption of Bardarbunga.

“At this time very few flights are routed through that particular region, and not many of them are frequented by New Zealanders,” says Thomas.

“Currently just 27 of our passengers are booked on these routes in the next three months.”

If travellers are concerned, House of Travel advises them to contact their travel agent to check whether they could be affected, and discuss potential options.

Travellers are also advised to ensure they have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place and ask whether disruption due to volcanic activity is adequately covered.
