As Student Job Search Business Development Manager, Shalesh Vasan, reports “At a time when the needs of students are constantly changing and it is now more expensive to be a student, it’s both gratifying and reassuring to know that Student Job Search’s placements, student earnings, employer and student satisfaction all increased in 2013/14 – with the latter being the highest it has ever been (i.e. 86%*). This proves that students are motivated to use Student Job Search (SJS) to find work while studying and gain valuable work experience that will benefit them in the future. It also shows that employers continue to see the various benefits, value and importance of hiring tertiary students - and using the SJS service to do so.”

Details of the results from the previous financial year are as follows:

Placements – 27,589, 5.1% above target. Student Earnings - $79 million, 7.6% above target. Employer Satisfaction – 88%*, 8% above target and Student Satisfaction – 86%*, 6% above target.

Obviously, the team at Student Job Search are extremely pleased with the results, and they are working on continuous improvements to add real value to employers and tertiary students in New Zealand. The many unique benefits students have to offer include their ability to add fresh ideas to the work place, as well as the fact that they are so IT literate. In the new knowledge economy, New Zealand businesses can see the benefits of hiring students with their superior technology skills, their willingness to learn and adapt, and not to mention the fact that they are smart!

The nature of the jobs students are being contracted for is becoming much more sophisticated. Students are currently being placed in contact centre work, data entry roles and even website development, the most important point being that they have an opportunity to gain experience in career-related jobs, develop vital skills and make contact with potential employers.

The Student Job Search philosophy is “Nothing beats experience – get jobs that pay now and later”. Employers are keen to see that a person has the basic skills and the capacity to put in a good day’s work, and ‘work history’ has become a very important factor. Employers are also much more likely to give a job to a young person leaving tertiary education if they already have this work history. Experience is now becoming the difference between securing and not securing that dream job, and most employers have now introduced formal policies setting out that an employee must have some form of work experience before being offered a job. Student Job Search results prove that their philosophy is working.
