ACES pest control is fielding many calls from the public as honey Bees swarm around Auckland

In spring,  honey Bees can take to the wing in search of a new home. This is what is called a bee swarm. It looks alarming to see hundreds and thousands of bees flying around a certain point, or holding onto each other off a tree in a "bee ball".

The immediate response is to call a pest controller to destroy the nest.

A bee swarm that has not gone inside a structure is able to be "rehoused" by a bee keeper.

IN FACT the bee association has set up a web site for the very purpose of putting local bee keepers in touch with the general public to facilitate the collection of these wayward bees.  Marc 021 455 180 is the contact for organizing a bee keeper to collect the swarm. Depending on the bee keeper there may be a charge for this service

If the nest has gone inside a structure e.g. a wall, often there is no other option but to destroy the nest.

Its worth making the effort to protect honey bees as they are in decline.

And most of us love their honey too!
