When young couple Adam and Kimberly started looking for their first home two years ago they had no idea it would take them until recently to find the home they were after.

“We imagined that we would find a house and sort the whole process within a few months of starting to look for one,” says Adam.

However, with the Auckland housing market currently going crazy Adam and Kimberly had to make some compromises with the house they first began hunting for.

Adam and Kimberly initially set out looking for a freestanding house in the inner suburbs of Auckland but found that the housing market was extremely competitive and “very difficult for young couples’. The pair almost got to a point of giving up on the idea of ever owning their own property before they finally bought their home.

There were a lot of decisions to be made before their purchase; Adam and Kimberly had to decide whether they wanted a huge mortgage for a small place closer to town or if they would be willing to commute from a nicer place on the outskirts of Auckland.

After considering many options such as buying an apartment, a unit or buying outside of Auckland, Adam and Kimberly decided to look further afield from the central Auckland area. Cost was a major factor in the couple making this decision but they do see many benefits in living further out.

With Adam and Kimberly buying further out of central Auckland they will have to do a fair bit of traveling however are far more happy with the quality of life they will have in their new community.
