We all know how beautiful Plume Restaurant & Vineyard is because we have been fortunate enough to attend a wedding there, and summer in Matakana is divine. However, winter is also a very cool (excuse the pun) time of the year to visit the restaurant and their Cellar door at Plume, to sample their range of Runner Duck Wines, not to mention their grape juice and olive oil, all made on the property.

For a little history on Plume Restaurant & Vineyard, their three hectare boutique vineyard is located at 37 Duck Creek Road in the Matakana appellation and was planted in 2003. The vineyard comprises about 1.5 hectare of Syrah, with the remainder being in Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot, allowing Runner Duck Estate to produce a pure Bordeaux varietal, a Syrah and a Rose. Another 0.5ha plot at Plume on Sharp road planted in the early 90s produces a crop of Sangiovaise.

Runner Duck Estate’s Cellar Door is situated at Plume the Vineyard Restaurant, Matakana, 49a Sharp Road, Matakana and their Cellar Door at Plume Runner Duck Estate is all about combining their true passions in life - family, lifestyle and premium wine. Plume’s Cellar Door is open Wednesday to Sunday, 11am – 430pm for wine tastings or to pick up the wine for your drinking pleasure or to add to your wine cellar. Plume, the vineyard restaurant, Matakana has a simple tasting plan with an opportunity to taste different combinations and people can spend a fun relaxing time with Plume’s wine experts, sipping different varieties with specialised attention and care. Free tastes of their premium flights are also available at the Cellar Door with any purchase of wine, one bottle per guest, and they offer tasting of any five of their wines available at the Cellar Door for $7 pp.

Their 2014 vintage was another great year for quantities and quality of grapes produced and follows closely the great years for Matakana of 2010 and 2013 so we should watch out for great wines from these years. Also Runner Duck has now introduced an excellent grape juice as well as Olive oil from their estate.

Plan a great day out by booking a table at Plume Restaurant this winter, and planning a tasting of Runner Duck wines, and you will find yourself coming home with some classic wines and maybe even a bottle of grape juice and some of their delectable olive oil.
