The clever folk at The Kitchen Design Company have put together some ‘Quick Reference Guides’ on their newly revamped website, including advice on which kitchen cabinets are best for our kitchens. There are several options for kitchen cabinets and they all come with different price tags, aesthetics and pros and cons, so how do people know which to choose?

Kitchen cabinet doors can come in a variety of different materials and it will depend on the look that you are trying to achieve, whether you have an exact colour in mind, the level of use the kitchen will get and your budget. The Kitchen Design Company’s quick reference guide talks about the different finishes, what they are best for and gives an indication of costs.

For instance, Melamine is durable and economical and comes in a reasonable range of colours and is best for families, landlords and those wanting a durable, cost effective kitchen.  Another type of cabinet door is the Vacuum Formed / Thermo-wrapped Vinyl door with a vinyl skin that is vacuumed on to the face of a water resistant MDF door, and has no visible line around the edge of the door. Clients can specify a patterned door in a product that is well proven and very durable, in a wide range of colours.

Then there are their Spray Painted Lacquer doors in a two pot paint finish somewhat similar to the paint on your car - you can specify any colour and degree of gloss, giving you almost limitless possibilities. Doors are available in a wide range of patterns and are more expensive than the other two options, requiring more care than other products.

Timber Veneer doors can be used for the whole kitchen or as a highlight when combined with other finishes and are very cost effective.

Solid Timber cabinet doors are quite unique and are great as an accent piece however, with a softer wood they can dent and scratch more easily. It is expensive to source good wood such as rimu and kauri and is the therefore most expensive option and rarely used in New Zealand kitchens.

The Kitchen Design Company don’t just do great kitchens, they can help with any type of renovations or building work, whether it’s the removal of a wall or building an extension onto the house – as they say, “Nothing too big or too small”.

Some of the building and builders’ work they have undertaken, includes removing an internal wall, re-arranging the layout of a house by moving and installing walls, windows etc., re-levelling / re-piling, adding an extension to a house or office, adding a deck to a house or office, building of garages and carports, bathrooms, pathways, cladding repairs, fencing fences, storage areas, installation of wooden floors, office and shop fit outs, property maintenance and leak detection.
