This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the horizontally-opposed Boxer engine for

the manufacturer of Subaru vehicles, Subaru Corporation, and Subaru of New Zealand are celebrating with special offers for customers who purchase a new Forester, Legacy 3.6RS or XV Crossover from an Authorised Subaru Dealership in the months of July, August and September 2016.  New Zealand customers are given the option to choose between two horizontally opposed deals when buying these models.

Subaru’s medium SUV, the capable, authentic All Wheel Drive Subaru Forester is offering a Tow and Protection Pack with purchase, or alternatively a 50 months with 0% interest finance offer. The Forester Tow and Protection Pack includes a tow bar, cargo tray and rear step panel.

The XV Crossover enables customers to continue to take advantage of adding more boot space to Subaru’s stylish, compact SUV with a complimentary Thule Roof Pack with purchase. Alternatively, if a finance offer is more suited, customers can purchase an XV Crossover on a 0% interest offer, paying 1/3 deposit, 1/3 at 12 months and 1/3 at 24 months.

Finally, the 2016 Subaru Legacy 3.6 RS has a national offer for the first time since launching the new generation model over 12 months ago. The spacious, powerful, large sedan can also be purchased on a special 50 months 0% interest finance offer, or alternatively, customers can choose to take advantage of a complimentary service plan, valued at $999*.

Subaru’s Marketing Manager, Daile Stephens says, “Providing Subaru customers with two horizontally opposed deals to choose between reinforces the unique movement of the pistons of a Boxer engine through the campaign idea.  This celebration enables Subaru to give customers a choice between a finance offer or a package which will add value to their purchase and enhance their every day life, if they don’t wish to enjoy the added value benefits to buy with finance. Typically kiwi Subaru customers are lifestyle focused and we believe that this promotion ensures there is something to suit all new Subaru Forester, XV Crossover and Legacy 3.6 RS owners.”

Subaru’s signature Boxer engine – named after the movement of the engine’s pistons, which resembles the movement of a boxer’s fists - was introduced in the Subaru 1000 compact passenger car on May 14, 1966. Since then, Subaru has sought to maximise the advantages of its Boxer engines and has continuously enhanced them to power its vehicles. Subaru of New Zealand’s Managing Director Wallis Dumper says Subaru’s Boxer engine has many benefits. “The unique design of our Boxer-engined beauties means they deliver less noise and vibration to the cabin with greater balance, stability, traction and control. These Subaru-specific advantages give Kiwi drivers a confident, fun and more engaging drive,” he says.

“Safety is paramount to Subaru and all our vehicles have five-star safety ratings. Our Boxer engine plays a role in Collision Protection due to its low height and low positioning in the chassis frame. In a frontal accident, other engine configurations, due to their increased height, are driven backwards and may possibly penetrate the passenger compartment resulting in severe injury, particularly to the lower limbs of the front occupants.

“The Boxer engine’s low height means it is driven backwards and downwards under the floor of the passenger compartment thereby reducing the likelihood of impact with the occupants,” Mr Dumper says.

Today, every vehicle sold by Subaru is fitted with a Boxer engine (except the OEM-supplied mini vehicles in Japan) and its total production over the past 50 years tops 16 million units.
In the horizontally-opposed design of the Boxer engine, the pistons face each other in a side-to-side symmetrical layout. The opposing pistons work to cancel out the inertia force of each other, resulting in less vibration and superb rotational balance which provides a smooth feel right up to the high rev range.

The Boxer engine is one of the key components of Subaru’s distinctive Symmetrical All Wheel Drive system. Subaru vehicles offer a combination of superior stability and traction intrinsic to All Wheel Drive. The balanced distribution of weight is provided by the symmetrically-laid out drivetrain, with the longitudinally-mounted Boxer engine positioned in line with it. The synergy delivers excellent performance speeds and brisk cornering.
