  • Canterbury Regional Robocup Competition
  • St Margaret’s College Students placed in results

Over the weekend Linda Chong, the Head for the Centre of Innovation at St Margaret’s College, had the privilege of supporting our girls at our first Robocup event. This year it was held at Burnside High school in the Aurora Centre. Children from all ages were making last minute adjustments in preparation for their respective competitions.

Linda says “St Margaret's had Caitlyn Wickham from Year 8 competing in the rescue section. This section comprised of four rounds of competition where robots had to complete a different course each round. Each course involved some line following and at the very end of the path the robot must a push a can out of the area to achieve maximum points. Competitors are able to adjust their programmes between rounds to accommodate for each new course.  Caitlyn needed to think on her feet and problem solve as each challenge was presented.

The theatre competition was a popular section.  This year we had RJM (Year 6 team); Snowgies (Year 9 and 10 team); and Han duo (Year 11 and 13 team).

Many hours have been spent in perfecting programmes which featured music, story telling and entertainment. Not only do the teams have to perform but they are also judges on an interview  with the judges about the processes they have used to create their theatre piece.  Being able to articulate and show evidence of what has been learnt along the way through regular blog posts, images and talking about personal their experiences was an important aspect of theatre.

On the day the robots tested our patience, resilience and problem solving skills. Right up to the last moment the girls were re-writing their programmes. Planning for everything to go perfectly is always the ideal outcome, but thinking flexibly and being spontaneous is often a helpful outlook as many variables can interfere with even the best laid plans.

All teams performed with confidence and were awesome ambassadors for St Margaret’s College.  They should feel very proud of their achievements and I was particularly impressed with the way in which the girls supported each other through the stress points during the day.  The parents also deserve an award for the amazing encouragement and patience that they had in supporting these wonderful girls to perform to their very best on the day.”
