Look Inwards, Ventura Inn and Suites Tells Hamilton City Council

Kenneth Mitchell of Ventura Inn and Suites says the Hamilton City Council needs to look within Hamilton to supply what’s lacking in the hotel market.
The Hamilton City Council recently commissioned a report to assess the level of demand for hotels within the city.
In the report, industry expert Albert Stafford said there was a "noticeable gap" for a four star plus hotel in Hamilton.
However, Mr Mitchell says his hotel, Ventura Inn and Suites, is currently undergoing renovations to bring it up to a four star rating. This would meet the need for a four star hotel without having to build a new one at a possible cost to Hamilton ratepayers.
“The project at Ventura is already well underway,” says Mr Mitchell. “We’re halfway through the renovations of all the guest rooms. We’ve got brand new Sealy beds in all the guest rooms, bought new furniture and chosen new bedspreads.”
The commissioned report suggested the Hamilton City Council could set aside land to offer at a reduced lease rate to an investor interested in building a new four-star hotel.
Mr Mitchell says he’s not opposed to building hotels, however he thinks the council should look at existing properties before burdening Hamilton ratepayers by using council land.
“There’s also a risk of putting too much supply out there,” says Mr Mitchell. “That could be damaging to everyone.”
“I’m as keen as anyone to see tourism picking up in Hamilton,” says Mr Mitchell. “It would be great to see carriers coming straight to Hamilton and avoiding the traffic problems and delays of getting through Auckland.
“I’d like to see tourists getting into the heartland of New Zealand faster, closer to the attractions, basing themselves in Hamilton. For that we’ll need quality, four or five star accommodation and that’s exactly what Ventura Inn and Suites plans to provide.”
