Once you have decided upon your preferred family photographer, it is important to begin taking the next steps in preparation for your session.  You will want to consider such things as hair and makeup for any female members of your family as well as clothing and colours to ensure your portraits look both professional and classy.

When selecting your outfits, remember above all else to choose a style that every member of your family feels comfortable in.  The last thing you want is to be feeling awkward in front of the camera, as this will certainly show through in your portraits.  With regards to colours, there is no right or wrong way to go about this.  Consider colours that compliment both your skin tones and also create consistency within your family.

It is best to not to try a complete new haircut just prior to your booking as you may feel self-conscious on the day if it doesn’t look as you had planned.  Rather, it is better to simply get a trim to your current style or plan a new style well in advance.

Hair and makeup should also be considered beforehand.  It is important not to use an overly glossy makeup to avoid a ‘shiny’ look in your portraits, as the studio lights will reflect from this.  Do not worry if any members of your family experience a break-out on the day of your shoot.  With modern day retouching technology these kinds of blemishes can be removed.

For bearded men, it is important to trim on the day of your shoot to look your best.  If you are clean shaven, you should shave on the day of your shoot to avoid a 5 o’clock shadow.

Other simple ways to ensure your portraits look professional include wearing freshly washed outfits, properly ironing your clothing as well as bringing along any accessories you may wish to wear in your portraits.  These can include jewellery, watches, ties etc.  These can add a nice touch to your photos, especially if they hold significant sentimental value.

As always it is best to discuss any questions you have with your photographer when booking your professional family photo shoot.  A little preparation will ensure that you feel both relaxed and comfortable throughout your photo shoot, helping make your family portraits the best they can be!
