Broadway, the heart of Kaikohe's central business district, is to receive a major road surface overhaul at the eastern entrance to the town.

Starting next week Transit NZ plans to reconstruct a failed section of Broadway from the Mangamutu Stream bridge westward to a point near the Mangakahia Road junction where the road pavement is still in good condition.

At the same time the pedestrian crossing near Mangakahia Road is to be relocated a few metres west from its present location to improve safety.

The project will be carried out by Transit's highway maintenance contractor, Downer EDI Works Ltd. Drainage works will be carried out first and the road surface reconstruction will follow.

Transit NZ has warned that there may be temporary disruptions to traffic movements and has advised vehicle drivers accessing Kaikohe from the east to allow a few minutes extra travelling time while construction work is in progress.

Letters advising of the road works are being distributed to affected businesses and residents this week.
