United States scientist and a world leader in his field, David Blume, will visit the Far North for a one-night presentation on the use and production of alcohol as a vehicle fuel.

The internationally recognized alcohol fuel expert is the executive Director of the International Institute for Ecological Agriculture. His client portfolio includes governments, farming interests and international companies involved in turning waste into profitable products.

As a Far North District Council economic development initiative, David Blume has been booked to address an open public meeting at the Mid-North Motor Inn at Kaikohe on Tuesday 14th October at 7 p.m.

David says it is possible and practical to grow and process crops which can be distilled to 105 octane car fuel through small-scale backyard, farm and community initiatives.

He sees alcohol as the fuel of the future either as a 50% petrol mix or as a fuel on its own which can be economically adapted to both existing petrol and diesel vehicles.

He believes any country can become energy independent by producing alcohol from plants. He points to Brazil where alcohol from sugarcane already fuels 50% of the national vehicle fleet utilizing as little as 1% of the land resource.

Among the advantages of alcohol as a fuel is its positive impact against global warming by taking carbon dioxide out of the air.

Alcohol fuel from a wide variety of crops, including even lawn clippings, can make a big difference to both the environment and the economy, creating new employment initiatives and eliminating the dependence on fossil fuels, he says.

David Blume's one-night Kaikohe address has been arranged as part of a whistle-stop visit to New Zealand to address a national convention at Taupo.
