UPPER HUTT

Wellington Police have arrested two Upper Hutt men, aged 20 and 25, in connection with an assault near the BP in Taranaki Street at the weekend.

The two men are jointly charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The 20 year-old faces another charge of possession of an offensive weapon. The 25 year-old is also charged with dangerous driving.

Detective Sergeant Shane Dye says it follows an incident which began at the BP in Taranaki Street, just after 1am on Sunday morning, where it's alleged two carloads of people had an altercation on the forecourt of the BP on Taranaki Street.

"One of the vehicles is alleged to have then driven the wrong way down Wakefield Street, followed by a concerned member of the public, who was then hit with a weapon."

The two men are on bail with strict conditions and will appear in the Wellington District Court on Wednesday 28 July 2010.
