Boating Incident

MOTUEKA

At about 3.25pm on Wednesday 20th April Police and Emergency Services were called to Port Motueka.

There a launch approx 7 metres in length had struck an unknown submerged object in the channel. This brought the boat to a sudden stop causing the occupants onboard to be thrown forward.

This occurred at the Northern end of Jacket Island and the boat came to rest on the seat wall situated on the island.

The skipper of the boat a 44 year old Motueka man has received a head injury and lacerations to his leg. He was airlifted to Nelson Hospital by helicopter... His injuries although serious are not life threatening.

The other 4 passengers on the boat a woman and 3 children were brought ashore with the assistance of locals and the Harbour Master. They have received minor cuts and bruises and were tended to by Ambulance staff.

The boat is to be recovered with the assistance of the Harbour Master and family members this evening.

The injured man is being followed up with Victim Support.

Police would like to thank the quick actions of locals and business which came to the immediate assistance of the skipper and his passengers.
