UPPER HUTT

Upper Hutt Police have today been completing a scene examination at a Chatsworth Road house which was the subject of an aggravated robbery early last night.

About 6pm, three men with their faces concealed, entered the house and confronted a 65 year old woman and her 67 year old husband, who were watching television at the time.

They held the couple at gunpoint and demanded cash and gold and tied up the couple before making off with a significant amount of money, in excess of $50,000. This money was business takings, kept in a locked safe.

Upper Hutt Area Commander Inspector Mike Hill says this incident is not a random attack.

"Our inquiries so far lead us to believe that these three offenders knew the occupants and have specifically targeted them. This has been a very scary incident for the victims, however they have managed to provide us with very valuable information throughout the course of our inquiries today."

Mike Hill says Police have received some good information from the public so far, however more is required to help Police identify these offenders.

"We want to hear from any residents of Chatsworth Road, who witnessed any suspicious activity between 5:30pm and 6:30pm last night or anyone who may know those responsible."

The three offenders are described as either Maori, Polynesian or African, of athletic build and all were wearing dark coloured clothing with their faces concealed by balaclavas. One offender was around 5 foot 2 inches, the other was a full head and shoulders taller than that and the third was about 6 foot.

Anyone with any information should contact Upper Hutt Police on (04) 527 2300 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
