Rotorua’s first 2011 Brooks Rotovegas Half Marathon has been hailed a success by sponsor Rotorua District Council (RDC) and events unit Events & Venues Rotorua.

Many out-of-towners were included in the 400 runners who took part in the event on Sunday [28 August], with numbers expected to rise next year following an enthusiastic response from participants to staging of the inaugural event.

RDC events manager Martin Croft says the half marathon took in a number of the city’s iconic features, giving walkers and runners the opportunity to see many locations unique to Rotorua.

“Tracks for this brand new event were woven through or past popular local sights, such as Kuirau Park, Rotorua International Stadium, Te Puia, The Redwoods and Lake Rotorua.

“The community spirit was amazing, with many locals seen and heard actively cheering on participants as they made their way around the 21km course.”

Mr Croft said feedback from participants was very positive, with many saying they will definitely be returning next year.

“The Rotovegas Half Marathon is expected to grow and become a regular event, drawing more and more people into Rotorua for the weekend.”

One competitor made the going extra difficult for himself. Taupo’s Allan Ure completed the 2011 Brooks Rotovegas Half Marathon wearing one piece motorcycle leathers and a full face motorcycle helmet to raise funds and awareness for the Muscular Dystrophy Association of NZ.
