Bay of Plenty Police are praising the 26,000+ strong crowd who attended the Ireland versus Russia Rugby World Cup game in Rotorua tonight.

“This is the biggest of the three games that Rotorua has hosted and the good behaviour from the festivities last night has extended to the game today, with no real problems inside or outside the Stadium,” says Inspector Scott Fraser, the Bay of Plenty Police RWC Operation Commander.

Inspector Fraser says one male was arrested at the Stadium for attempting to get onto the field of play.

“The offender managed to get onto the outer field, but the quick actions of security meant that he was not able to get onto the main field of play and he was not able to disrupt the game. He spent the rest of the game at the Rotorua Police Station and will be charged under the Major Events Management Act.

“There was congestion outside the stadium immediately after the game, but this was cleared within a relatively short period of time.”

Inspector Fraser says members of Police will have a visible presence in the CBD and on roads across the District tonight following on from the game.

“Our Police operation is about making sure visitors and locals feel safe during RWC, regardless of whether they are in their homes, at games or events, or on the roads. Please take care out there tonight – look after yourself and look after your mates.”
