When is a Christmas Parade float not a Christmas Parade float? When it’s a ‘cycling float’.

The Far North District Council will celebrate the Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail at this year’s Kaikohe Christmas Parade on December 9 by entering a cycling float in the parade.

Float organiser Lau’rell Pratt says the council wanted to mark what has been a fantastic year for Kaikohe, with the Okaihau-Kaikohe leg of the trail opening in May.

“Hundreds of cyclists from across Northland attended the Mayoral Challenge.

“We wanted to bring a bit of that fun to the Christmas parade and remind Kaikohe people of the wonderful recreational amenity they have on their doorstep.”

The council is inviting people to decorate bikes and ride them in the parade which has a nursery rhyme theme this year.

“Perhaps a married couple out there would like to ride a bicycle built for two as in the old nursery rhyme Daisy Bell about marriage and a bicycle?”

Enthusiastic council staff will help people decorate their bikes at the Mid-North Motor Inn from 4pm on parade day and offer prizes for the best-dressed bikes.

“We’ll have lots of tinsel, balloons and crepe paper for people to use or they can bring their own decoration materials to make their bike stand out in the crowd.”

They will also escort the cycling float in the parade which starts at 6pm and is expected to feature a group of unicyclists.

“We’re especially keen to see children decorate their bikes and ride in the parade, but please wear a safety helmet and bring a parent or supervisor if you’re under 14.”

Interested people can register for the riding float online at www.fndc.govt.nz or by phoning 09 401 5200.

People who take part in the bike decoration workshop before the parade will be asked to make a gold coin donation to a local charity.
