At 9.26am on Wednesday 26 September 2012, there will be a national earthquake drill “New Zealand ShakeOut”.

The purpose of this drill is to remind everyone in New Zealand what to do in an earthquake - Drop, Cover, Hold:

  • Drop to the floor, under a desk,
  • Cover your head with one hand and
  • Hold the desk leg with your other hand

The aim is to have at least 1 million people across the country registered to participate in the earthquake drill.

To coincide with New Zealand Shakeout, Napier Civil Defence will be sounding the emergency sirens across the city.

What can you do?

  • Register yourself and your family now at www.getthru.govt.nz Help make Napier the most prepared city in the country!
  • Tell everyone you know about NZ ShakeOut and encourage them to register.
  • Take pictures of your family or workplace participating in NZ ShakeOut. Upload them to www.shakeout.govt.nz and be in to win some great emergency readiness prizes.
