Conchords hit takes off for charity

Kiwi comedy duo Flight of the Conchords has hit the right note among New Zealanders with the song it penned as a fund-raiser for the Cure Kids charity.

A recording of the song “Feel Inside (and stuff like that)” has flown up the charts since it was released last Friday (Aug. 24) selling more than 10,000 copies to date.

Now it’s on track to break the record for most single sales in a week, a record set by Ben Lummis in 2004 with “They Can’t Take That Away”.

The stats for “Feel Inside (and stuff like that)” make impressive reading:

• More than 10,000 copies sold since Friday August 24.
• The first digitally-available recording to go gold (7,500 copies) within 48 hours of release.

Recording Industry Association of NZ Chart Manager Phil Matcham says the single’s official chart position will be announced on www.nztop40.co.nz on Monday at 5pm.

“Ben Lummis, the first winner of NZ Idol, set the current record for most single sales in a seven-day period at 11,987. We are excited to see whether “Feel Inside (and stuff like that)” can break this record.”

“Feel Inside (and stuff like that)” was part of the Red Nose Day: Comedy for Cure Kids TV special and features the vocals of some of New Zealand’s leading musicians.

Flight of the Conchords duo Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement interviewed a host of children for lyrical inspiration and many of the kids’ observations on illness are included in the song.

Brooke Howard Smith, Cure Kids event organiser said that the organisation was ecstatic with the reception the song had received. “We’ve been blown away by the success of the song, not just in how well it’s sold here, but by how it’s been received overseas. We can’t thank Bret, Jemaine, Printz and the crew at Roundhead enough for the time & effort they put in”

The TV event raised more than $1.3 million for Cure Kids, a charity that aims to find cures for the life-threatening illnesses that affect many of the country’s children.
