Wellington City Council's Keith Spry Pool in Johnsonville will be presented with a SportAccess Award from the Halberg Trust this Friday 23 November.

The pool has gained silver accreditation for its work with the disabled and special needs community, and is only the fourth aquatic facility in New Zealand to receive the award.

Julian Todd, the Council's Recreation Wellington Manager, says the Halberg Trust award demonstrates the commitment of the Council in providing accessible sports facilities for the whole community.

"Keith Spry Pool has installed wheelchair access into the pool and a chair lift into the spa pool, as well as accessible shower and toilet facilities, and car parks. These facilities mean that everyone can enjoy coming to the pool and they help to make Wellington a more inclusive city."

The SportAccess Awards recognise sports clubs and facilities that provide opportunities for people with disabilities to take part in sport and recreation. Facilities must meet certain criteria, including putting a disability action plan into place and showing long-term commitment to promoting the inclusion of disabled people.
