Mt Tongariro - update

22 November, 10am: There was a brief eruption from Mt Tongariro in the central North Island at approximately 1:30pm yesterday, Wednesday 21 November, New Zealand time.

The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management (MCDEM) and GNS Science volcanologists are monitoring the situation and will release further information as it is becomes available.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing has been closed. It is suggested travellers visiting the area check with their travel agent, or directly with operators.

Some regional flights have been cancelled. Passengers are advised to check the Air New Zealand website for flight arrivals and departures information which will be constantly updated.
