As part of improving pedestrian and vehicle safety on the Golden Mile, Bond Street is now closed for vehicles at the intersection with Willis Street.

Pedestrians no longer have to negotiate vehicles turning into or out of Bond Street, and the closure also addresses vehicle safety at this intersection where there have been seven reported crashes since the end of 2010.

The Council's Transport Portfolio Leader, Councillor Andy Foster, says the closure of Bond Street will provide extra space for cafe tables and pedestrians at the Willis Street end.

"We're also investigating the possibility of extending the pedestrian area along Bond Street, similar to that of Grey Street, which would make the street a much safer and more people-friendly area."

The good news for motorists and local businesses is that there are three more parking spaces in Bond Street, and more loading zones.

Other changes to be aware of - the taxi rank on Bond Street has moved to Mercer Street and the motorcycle bays on Mercer have relocated to Bond. The loading zone on Mercer Street has been moved to the southern side of the street.

The proposal to close Bond Street went out for public consultation in November and was approved by Councillors last week.
