It is always very exciting to hear of a new offering from Viva Expeditions and this month they have a fabulous 13-day adventure, exploring remote Southern Patagonia. This will include some of South America’s finest national parks, including the Los Glaciers National Park, home to some of the world’s most stunning ice formations, Torres Del Paine National Park, famous for its granite pillars, lakes and mountains and Tierra del Fuego national park, located in one of the most Southern regions of the world.
This tour starts in El Chalten, located in the stunning Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, home to an ice field with the world’s third largest reserve of fresh water. Guests stay in a hotel nestled quietly under the imposing peaks of Mount Fitzroy, named after the captain of the Beagle, who navigated Darwin’s expedition of the area in 1834. From there they take a boat trip across the lake to the Viedma Glacier, the largest in Argentina where they will have the opportunity to explore ice caves and take a walk on the huge ice sheet.

It is then time to take a short drive around Lake Argentina to the town of El Calafate to visit the impressive Perito Moreno glacier, one of the earth’s most dynamic and accessible ice fields. Visitors can take a boat trip along the face of the glacier, giving them the opportunity to admire its impressive height that reaches, at points, 80 metres from the water level and stretches five kilometres from edge to edge.

From there the tour crosses into Chile, arriving at Torres del Paine National Park where visitors camp on the edge of the picturesque Lake Pehoe, under the constant watch of the towering granite peaks and circling condors. This is the base to explore what is to many, South America’s finest national park. Each day there are hikes through emerald forests to magnificent glaciers, along alpine rivers and lakes in an area of unparalleled beauty.

After four nights inside Torres del Paine National Park, it is time to drive south to Punta Arenas, stopping on the way to visit Seno Otway penguin colony, home to approximately 3000 breeding pairs of Maganellic penguins. The tour then continues across the Straits of Magellan, arriving into the most southerly city in the world, Ushuaia, the final destination.
