Hundreds of events aim to get Kiwis on their bikes

Thousands of keen Kiwis cyclists are expected to participate in a series of events around the country during February as part of Bike Wise Month, New Zealand's annual cycling celebration that encourages more Kiwis to get on their bikes.

Bike Wise is an annual programme of events run by the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA), which aims to expose Kiwis to the enjoyments and health benefits of cycling, as well as educating them on safe cycling techniques, including how to share the road safely with motorists and pedestrians.

With hundreds of cycling events registered to take place throughout the country, there will be an event to suit every budding cyclist, from family-friendly festivals to competitive races, and even a series of Big Bike Tune Ups, where free bike checks are offered to ensure bikes are in safe working order before setting out.

This year marks the 11th year of the Bike Wise programme, which last year attracted over 54,000 participants nationwide.

“Bike Wise Month provides Kiwis with hundreds of opportunities to get out on their bikes more often and have fun with family and friends,” says NZTA’s Network User Behaviour Manager, Jennie Gianotti.

“Our climate and scenery provide the perfect environment for cycling. Bike Wise is keen to ensure Kiwis have roadworthy bikes, wear approved helmets and share the road safely with other road users.”  she says.

Go By Bike Day

As part of Bike Wise Month, Go By Bike Day will be held on Wednesday 13 February. On this day, New Zealanders are encouraged to leave the car at home and cycle to work, school or wherever they are going. Cyclists of all ages and abilities are encouraged to take part and a number of free breakfasts will be held in select towns and cities.
