Inaugural Whanau Triathlon to launch in March

Sport Manawatu, in partnership with the Mid-Central District Health Board are proud to launch the inaugural Whānau Triathlon Event. Accept the challenge and join in the biggest triathlon event in the Manawatu.

The Whanau Tri will be hosted by the Palmerston North Lido Aquatic Centre On Sunday March 24. The event caters for all ages and abilities, including a ‘Splash and Dash’ kids event, through to a long course for people wanting to challenge themselves.

Over 200 participants from Palmerston North, Dannevirke, Otaki and Shannon have been preparing for the event by taking part in an 8 week programme run by Sport Manawatu. The programme is designed to give participants the skills and confidence they need to complete a triathlon, as well as make sustainable lifestyle changes.

Sport Manawatu Events Advisor Kathy McMillan is expecting the Whānau Tri will be a great event and attract many people from the community.

“We are expecting lots of new entries to join the participants who have been taking part in the programme. There are event options to suit everyone, from seasoned pros through to the little ones, and everyone in between! We hope to attract over 600 participants in this first year”.

The event will include a festival atmosphere celebrating health and culture, featuring stalls, entertainment and lots of extra activities and competitions for people to enjoy.

Sport Manawatu is partnering with the Manawatu Triathlon club to deliver a professional and safe event for all involved.

“We hope that the event will be the start of lots of positive journeys for all involved, and participants will go on to give other sports and events a go”, says Miss McMillan.

Entry is $5 and all participants receive a medal and a chance to win lots of great spot prizes. We also have a family discount for a family of 4 for $15.
