They’re from South Africa, Sri Lanka, the UK, America, Ireland and of course New Zealand.

On April 6th, the entire team from Christchurch structural engineering firm Constructure is taking on the challenge of the annual 101km Forrest Grape Ride in Marlborough with the goal of raising $20,000 for St John, and the team is a reflection of the wide range of nationalities in the city for the rebuild.

The nine-member team, made up of both experienced and novice cyclists, has joined together and will individually tackle the Forrest Grape Ride to both improve fitness and raise funds for St John.

Constructure Ltd Managing Director, Cory Bedford, says taking on the challenge is a great team building activity particularly as there are so many employees from all over the world.

“Our team is like a United Nations entry,” he says. “Mustafa is from Sri Lanka and has never ridden a bike before and then there’s Bobby from Ireland who did the Coast to Coast this year. Only three of the nine team members are from New Zealand and as you can see, our level of ability varies hugely; we can’t wait.”

Bedford adds that a staff member who has actually left after recently having a baby is also doing the ride and a brand new staff member, Isabel, has had her arm gently twisted. “We started leaving the lycra on her desk after her second day,” he says.

The Constructure team has been training for several months now and each member will individually ride the 101km section and the team has the full support of their company.

“I have pledged to match the money we raise”, says Cory. “It’s important that as a business, we give something back to the community and this was a good way to do that.”

Constructure chose St John because they wanted to acknowledge the fantastic work the organisation does in the community.

St John Fundraising Manager Sarah Wilkinson says the team from Constructure Ltd has taken on a major enterprise.

“It’s great to see a team of people so positive and focused about their health and fitness – and so keen to help support St John.” Ms Wilkinson says St John is grateful for the support from Constructure. St John has a keen interest in promoting health and well-being to the community, both through our caring of patients but also through initiatives such as first aid training, and our St John Youth programme.

We’ve also had links with the Forrest Grape Ride for a number of years through our first aid Event cover.  We wish the team from Constructure Ltd every success – we’re sure they’ll meet the challenge the ride throws at them,” she says.
