Spirited Leadership's Mentoring Helps Reduce Isolation For Leaders
There is no doubt that it is true to say that the more senior a person is in leadership, the more potential there is to become increasingly isolated and the less likely they are to receive feedback. How then can someone develop their leadership beyond their natural talents? At Spirited Leadership they provide professional and personal development coaching and mentoring support for Senior Leaders in all sectors, including government, health, community, corporate and business.
The coaching and mentoring aims of the professionals at Spirited Leadership are to deepen essential qualities and skills required for excellent leadership and increasing effectiveness in personal relationships. They aim to increase a person’s self-awareness and interpersonal skills, increasing opportunities for feedback and reducing isolation. In this way they will develop effective leadership skills and management strategies, helping the person to focus on the important as well as the urgent. These facilities will help them to increase their personal resilience and wellbeing.
The way it works at Spirited Leadership is that they ask their clients to initially commit to four or five sessions, including a review. This will assess the next steps in development, whether they be coaching and mentoring and/or something else. Sessions take place every three to four weeks, lasting for one hour (or longer if required on specific issues). They can be face to face or other media such as Skype can be used. These coaching and mentoring sessions form the basis for development. During this time a further support programme can be put in place if required. This can include features such as feedback from staff, peers, managers and stakeholders, shadowing in the workplace and work with the leader’s teams and boards.
Since 2005 the team at Spirited Leadership have been working in close partnership with a large public sector health provider to develop leadership capacity in senior leaders. The purpose is to grow a more effective, enabling and empowering work culture. They have so far worked with over 150 leaders through group training, peer supervision and one on one coaching. They are definitely now seeing changes in leadership style. From a ‘do as you are told’ style, there is now a more collaborative approach. There have also been significant changes in awareness and attitudes, from negative and reactive to being proactive and taking responsibility, developing feedback skills and realising the importance of mindfulness.
