The New Plymouth District Council has released a statement saying that the district is currently having lots of issues with two water mains which is currently effecting thousands of homes.

Water mains have stopped in the Whaiwakio area which includes Glen Avon, The Valley and surrounding areas, including parts of Fitzroy.

The issues began just after 2pm and the New Plymouth District Council within seconds of alerts going off sent teams out to investigate.

The second water main to be effected was affecting water supply to Veale Road, Ashmore Drive and Shelter Grove, three main streets in the district.

The District Council are currently doing all they can to isolate the issue and to stop it from causing a backlog and spreading to other water mains.

The council are trying to get water back to concerned residents who were told when the issues began to happen that the water was contaminated but infonews.co.nz can now confirm that was not the case and that the problem is that the water mains have shut down.

The council have said "Crews are at both sites and will re-establish the water supplies as soon as possible."
