NEW PLYMOUTH

On the 4th of February New Plymouth Youth In Politics broke exclusively that New Plymouth bar owner Bertie Burleigh says he was devastated that his application for a special liquor license to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Magog Motorcycle Club has been rejected.

Mr Burleigh, owner of Peggy Gordon's Celtic Bar, had planned a street party on Egmont St on March 1 from 4pm to 12am, with five rock bands at the function.

Food, alcohol and drinks would also be served in the enclosed vicinity.

Mr Burleigh had previously successfully run 17 street closures for events and would today meet with members to discuss what their next steps would be.

There were thoughts of moving the party outside of New Plymouth however the party is confirmed to go ahead despite the special license application being declined.

In December the district council voted 10-4 to allow Peggy Gordon's bar to close Egmont St from 4pm on March 1 to 4am the following morning.

The $47.50 tickets have been on sale through Ticketmaster and at Vinyl Countdown and Peggy Gordons since December.

Before the application hearing last week only 30 tickets had been sold, but Mr Burleigh said he expected people had been waiting to see if the event would go ahead and he was hopeful of selling about 1200 tickets.

Numerous New Plymouth residents have told Youth In Politics that they're looking forward to going anyway.

More to come in the days to follow.
