Rotorua’s Kane Radford leads the first group of swimmers to be officially named for August’s Pan Pacific Swimming Championships.

The Pan Pacific Championship, a quadrennial event rated only behind the Olympics and World Championships, involves the non-European nations including the swimming powerhouses of USA, Australia, Japan and Canada.

Radford and Charlotte Webby (AquaBladz, Taranaki) have been confirmed by selectors for the Pan Pacific Championships on the Gold Coast on 21-25 August while Ashburton’s Grace Sommerville and Liam Albery (Capital) will contest the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Hawaii the following week.

The quartet earned consideration for selection following the BHP Billiton Aqua Super Series meet in Perth recently.

The Pan Pacific Championships will be held for just the third time in Australia, with the 10km open water competition set for the final day on Monday 25 August will be staged at the Southport Marine Stadium, which is directly off the Southport Spit, better known as the home of the Seaworld marine attraction.

The Junior Pan Pacs will be held in Maui, Hawaii on 25-27 August.

The pool swimmers for both meets will be named after the major competitions in April.
