BAY OF PLENTY

Around 600 fresh-faced students kicked off the 2014 tertiary year at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic’s Windermere Campus yesterday.

Both students and new staff were welcomed onto the site at a powhiri (welcome ceremony). A karanga by Hinerongo Walker called the students onto Pomare (the Polytechnic’s meeting house) with kaumatua Robert Te Pere giving some warm words of welcome to the new recruits.

Amongst the new faces were students enrolled onto the Polytechnic’s new Bachelor of Creative Industries. Developed in consultation with industry, the degree is the first for the Polytechnic and received a large amount of interest from students of all ages.

Also proving popular were animal care, business studies, engineering, immigration, legal studies, marine studies, preparation for law enforcement and sport and fitness.

A staggered start to the tertiary year saw some courses start two weeks ago with the majority starting 17 February and the remainder on 3 March in line with university timetabling.
