The New Zealand Film and Television School has turned out yet another winning film with Oscar being selected for screening at the 2014 Speechless Film Festival in Mankato, Minnesota, America.

Oscar is a short film directed by Isauro Torres, Crew 26.  It’s about an oddball character, Oscar, who buckles under the pressure of the daily grind and desperately tries to gather the courage to talk to local checkout chick Suzy.  Having dragged himself through years of a crippling marriage the odds are against him.  He finds the first sight of human connection in an inanimate object that could potentially put the town in danger.  When things take a turn for the better he is thrown another challenge and is forced to take a chance against the order and routine he has known for so long.

Director, Isauro Torres is a recent graduate of The New Zealand Film and Television School, graduating at the end of last year.    Oscar is his first short-film.  It was an invaluable experience working with actors as well as being part of a team said Torres.  ‘It was a very refreshing learning opportunity and an eye-opener to the power of performance”.

It is wonderful that yet another of our student films has been selected for an international film festival said Sima Urale, Head Tutor, New Zealand Film and Television School.  “It’s great to be getting recognition internationally; it shows and endorses the quality of the work produced by our graduate filmmakers.”

Oscar will be screened at the Speechless Film Festival 20-22 March 2014.
