Spain's Mario Mola has won his second ITU Triathlon event in consecutive weeks in a time of 52 minutes and 30 seconds.

Mola, who won the Mooloolaba event last weekend, was 15 seconds behind the leader after the swim but made up time in the 5km run after being in the leading group in the 20km cycle leg in New Plymouth.

Fellow Spanid Javier Gomez finished in second place with Joao Silva of Portugal in third.

New Zealand favourite Ryan Sissons finished in sixth place 36 seconds behind the winner.

In the women's race Katie Hursey of the United States won the gold medal with New Zealand Andrea Hewitt in second place.  Kate Mcilroy was leading the women's cycle leg, but dropped off the pace to finish eleventh.

The next event for most of this weekend's competitors will be the ITU Triathlon in Auckland in two weeks.
