BAY OF PLENTY

Aimed at educating young locals on everyday sustainable practices, this month Bayfair Shopping Centre is encouraging the community to “love their backyard” as part of the region’s month-long focus on sustainability.

In a day dedicated to informing locals on practical ways they can support the environment, Bayfair is running a ’Trash to Treasure’ workshop. Experts from Sustainable Coastlines will be exclusively stationed in-centre to teach kids and adults alike about the benefits of recycling, how to recycle correctly and the kinds of ‘treasures’ you can find amongst some of that trash!

There will also be games for the kids on the day. While these games will be entertaining, they will also educate youngins on some of the practical ways they can have a positive impact on the environment. Games include ‘Ocean Puzzles’ and ‘Chocolate Fishing’.

Bayfair Shopping Centre has a long standing commitment to sustainability. Last year alone, Bayfair diverted more than 279,000kgs of cardboard and paper (equal in weight to a small aeroplane); over 33,000kgs of plastic, glass and metal waste (equal in weight to a 70ft crane); and 66,000kg or organic waste (equal in weight to 300,000 apples) from landfill.
