Feeling the cold snap? Well it's not just you,   it's your furry friends outside too. ACES pest control's phone is running hot with customers calling about rats and mice invading their homes. After a long, dry and warm summer, conditions that favour rodents, their numbers have increased. With the recent drop in temperature the our furry friends are looking for warmer environs. Your house or kitchen seems like a great spot to them.

Rats! There are two types of rats in Auckland, the roof rat ( also called the ship rat and black rat) and sewer rat ( also called the norway rat or brown rat or river rat). The most common rodent in houses is the roof rat.

ACES pest control estimates that up to one in two houses in Auckland  has roof rats!

Rats suffer from NEOPHOBIA, meaning they are scared of the new. Being phobic they stick to trails. Trails when frequented by high numbers of rats or over a long period of time leave a smear mark from the oils on the rodents fur and skin. These smear marks look like vegemite has been spread over a beam or pipe. To the rodent this trail means safety and security.

If a trail,  even if is old leads up a tree and into your house, any rats wondering along in this cold weather is going to see this as a neon light flashing "VACANCY" sign for free accommodations.

Then you have some univited guests staying free of charge!

Well its no big deal? Well only that rats carry viral diseases like  leptospirosis and were and still are responsible for diseases such as the Black Death and Bubonic plague.

Mice are so cute why is it a problem if they are living in the kitchen? Well they carry salmonella that can make you very sick. They spread it on your food preparation surfaces when you sleep.

Unfortunately they also feel the cold as well. Mice unlike rats dont suffer from neophobia, and are much more likely to be seen in your kitchen. Most likely the enter via under your floor in your kitchen. Best to get something sorted quickly as mice breed very quickly. Before you know it they are many!
