Hair Loss And Menopause

Menopause can be a daunting time for some women with a series of physical and hormonal changes taking place. Although not as well-known as other symptoms, hair loss during menopause can affect up to 50% of women. Clive Hair Clinics has noted a dramatic increase in the number of females with concerning levels of hair loss. “Nearly 50% of our clients are female now, compared with about 20% around 20 years ago and many of these clients are also experiencing menopause,” says trichologist, Dorothy Bent.

Hair loss can be caused by hormone imbalance. During childbearing years, higher levels of the female hormone, oestrogen, are produced. They bind the male hormone, androgen, to prevent their entry into hair follicle and root cells. When women reach menopause, production of oestrogen slows, sometimes leading to an imbalance with the excess of male hormones, resulting in hair loss.  Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is often prescribed to lessen the effects of menopause, and raising oestrogen levels can help reduce or prevent hair loss. However, HRT is not suitable for all women and some prefer not to use this treatment.
