The two main reasons some returns are taking longer are that Inland Revenue have issued the wrong type of return and MyTax.co.nz needs to contact them to get the correct return issued. The other reason is that Inland Revenue have placed the refund into review.

Lester advises that if people have been advised that their refund is under review they will have most likely been provided a time frame by email and that if a refund is in review they shouldn’t panic. There are several reasons as to why a refund could be in review. One could be that Inland Revenue are calculating a person’s Working for Families’ entitlement (this is the most common reason). Another reason could be that their refund amount is over $2,500, or that income details from employers need to be confirmed. In the case of students, it could be that student loan checks are still taking place.

In the small amount of cases where the refund may not have been released after the time frame Inland Revenue has provided, MyTax.co.nz would then contact them again and get a referral sent to remove the error holding up the refund.  To this end they are checking daily for any changes and will contact their clients as soon as an update can be provided.
