Donations from a past pupil and another from a former chairman of the board of trustees have kicked off a new alumni fund for Rotorua Boys' High School.

Principal, Chris Grinter said the School had recently established the alumni fund with the Geyser Community Foundation, who will manage the fund.

"The alumni fund is a special and powerful way in which students, past and present, their families / whanau, teachers and anyone else who has an interest in helping the School continue to develop can give back for its long term benefit."

The alumni fund is a named endowment fund.  Donations made to the fund will be invested by the Geyser Community Foundation and the capital retained forever.  Income earned on the capital will be made available to the School for charitable purposes every year once it reaches a minimum of $50,000.

Mr Grinter said the annual income could be used in a number of ways for the benefit of students such as providing scholarships and prizes, providing or improving sporting and other facilities at the School or protecting the environment.  "Income could also be used to provide assistance to school students who are in need or suffereing genuine temporary or long-term financial hardship, including anyone who does not have access to the normal things of life that most of us take for granted."

"In applying the income from the fund, the School would take the wishes of the donors into account."

Donations of any size can be made by credit card on the School's website www.rbhs.school.nz

People can also make donations of $100 more in cash or by cheque for the alumni fund to Rotorua Boys' High School or to the Geyser Community Foundation, telephone 07 349 7496 or email annette@geysercf.org.nz

Geyser will issue official donations receipts to all donors.
