ACT Safety Ltd is now providing training in elevated work platforms in the workplace.
As per Best Practice Guidelines for Mobile Elevating Work Platforms August 2014 put out by Worksafe New Zealand, “An employer or principal, who tells someone to use a MEWP, must make sure that the operator is adequately trained by a competent person and can demonstrate their competency before using any equipment.”

One means of demonstrating competency is through completing nationally recognized MEWPs NZQA unit standards or an equivalent or higher qualification. Any course must cover the requirements of AS2550.10: Cranes, Hoists and Winches – Safe Use – Mobile Elevating Work Platforms and course providers should be able to offer evidence of this.  Competency should also be assessed through supervision during the use of the equipment. Our MEWP trainees will gain unit standards and the training will cover the following;

 Demonstrate knowledge of legislative requirements in relation to Codes of practice
 Be able to assess your worksite and identify and control potential hazards
 Carry out pre-operational checks on the EWP prior to use and know the safety responsibilities when in operation
 Report faults and understand correct shut down procedures and making EWP safe
 Be aware of safe distances from electrical conductors
 Understand the load limitations of EWPs
 Demonstrate knowledge of your personal protective equipment requirements
 Understand the minimum approach distances and competent worker zone
 and more

ACT Safety will carry out this training on your own work site and for a maximum of 6 trainees. The theory and practical training will be completed in one day with the practical training being completed on the MEWPs you have available on your site (usually up to 2 in one day).

As employees will also be working at height it is recommended that they complete harness training with a recommendation that NZQA Unit Standard 23229 Use a Safety Harness for
Personal Fall Prevention when Working at Height as an option or have an equivalent or a higher international qualification.
