The experienced and professional team at Diamonds.co.nz have the following advice on buying ‘GST free’ diamonds, and go on to say that a lot of people don’t realise that if they are travelling overseas, they are able to export their diamond GST free through the Auckland Airport and some other New Zealand airports at a cost of NZ$25.00. The diamond has to be mounted and invoiced to the owner of the jewellery who is travelling.

How this works is that, one, the diamond must be mounted, or set in a piece of jewellery, and two, the export must be completed within 30 days of the invoice date. Diamonds.co.nz will arrange the necessary paper work for the Airport Authority and a day before the person travels the package will be delivered to the airport. Once they are through Security and Immigration and are on airside they can pick up their parcel at The Collection Point (at Auckland Airport). This facility is cost effective on items above $10,000 and is very advantageous on high ticket items.

The Diamonds.co.nz team advise people to note that if they are considering purchasing a diamond from an offshore diamond or jewellery company they will be charged GST on importation and will not be able to claim the GST back. Also, this Airport export facility is only available for diamonds and jewellery purchased in New Zealand. Diamonds of high value are sold at very competitive margins so this is a very big incentive to buy locally and save 15%.

Synthetic diamonds are a hot subject at present and there is more production of gem quality synthetic diamonds now than ever before. The main companies involved are Gemesis Cultured Diamonds and Apollo Diamond Inc, both companies being based in America. There have been major advances in the production of synthetic diamonds since General Electric first produced synthetic diamonds in 1954. The Diamonds.co.nz team advise that synthetic diamonds are man-made diamonds which have the same chemical, physical and optical properties as natural diamonds which are produced by subjecting carbon-bearing material such as graphite to high temperature and pressure. Diamonds produced by this method are normally not colourless with the majority being shades of yellow.

Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) is a more recent method of production. This method does produce colourless synthetic diamonds and growth rates are now a matter of hours. Identification of synthetic diamonds requires highly equipped gemological laboratories and highly trained personnel. To this end, Diamonds.co.nz hasten to reassure their customers that all diamonds listed on the Diamonds.co.nz database have been tested using the DiamondSure to ensure 100% natural origin.
