CHRISTCHURCH

Feuding faeries and lumbering labourers collide in a comedy of Shakespearean proportions as the 2014 Rangi Ruru Junior Production comes to life under the stars this month.

In 2012, Rangi Ruru’s Director of Theatre Arts, Robert Gilbert and a number of senior Drama students attended a workshop at The National Theatre in London. There they learnt the puppetry performance skills used to create the worldwide theatrical hit, War Horse.

Last year, Robert and his students put those skills to use in a short version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream which they called Bottom’s Tale. The Rangi team took that production to the Theatre Festival on Norfolk Island, winning the award for Best Production against adult theatre groups from around Australia and New Zealand.

Director of Theatre Arts, Robert Gilbert, says this new production featuring the younger students builds on the legacy established in 2013.

“From the workshop at The National Theatre in London to the win across the Tasman, the journey to this point has been exciting and a unique opportunity for our drama scholars. Now the junior production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” completes that journey and Christchurch audiences can enjoy the performance in a beautiful, outdoor location,” he says.

Enjoy a picnic on the lawn under the trees, or book tiered seating brought in especially for the production. Delight in the magic, mix-ups and music that is A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
