Pressure to decrease medical spend across all developed healthcare economies is a growing challenge for healthcare providers, says Leigh McKenzie, business development manager of Surestop.

The core product for the existing SureStop range comprises the hemostatic dressing.  The annual global spend on hemostatic agents in the hospital sector alone is estimated to be $3b - $4b.  This excludes pre-hospital, military, dental and other applications.

“Manufacturers and distributors must be able to respond as healthcare practitioners seek improved value from their budgets,” McKenzie says.

“The climate is therefore favourable for a product range that offers best in class performance to a significant area of spend and can offer cost savings.  We are seeing the market actively seeking an examination of alternative haemostatic agents from which SureStop will emerge favourably,” he said.

Increasing consolidation within the medical distribution channel is also a feature of the current market, he says.

“This has the effect of removing layers of margin so that products can be positioned within an increasingly budget conscious environment.  Vertically integrated companies will therefore be best placed to thrive, he says.

SureStop is the brand name for an extensive range of woundcare dressings, which have been in use for several years initially within China, and which have only recently gained FDA certification internationally.

The core product is a plant-based Oxidised Regenerated Cellulose (ORC) haemostatic agent presented in a wide range of dressing formats to cover trauma, surgery, dental, nasal, post-trauma and post-surgery, which are now being introduced to the world market with  widespread acclaim.

The SureStop range also currently includes hydrogel dressings for non-healing wounds, and silicone gel sheets to reduce scarring from trauma or surgery.  It is also intended that additional products will be added to the range.

Target markets for the Surestop products are medical (trauma, surgery, wound care), dental, military, consumer (OTC and Pharmacies/Chemists), sports and veterinary.
