CANTERBURY

As some move forward positively, a significant number of Cantabrians still have questions and need support around earthquake claims.

One of the organisers, Melanie Tobeck-Bourke says this is the third event of its kind that she’s been involved with and it is clear that people need questions answered to provide recommendations and direction.

“This is new to most of us isn’t it, so as we move from one part of the process to the next, there are new questions, new things people aren’t sure about,” she says. “Our audiences share experiences with each other and with many people going through what some have already been through. It’s a good way to learn from the experience of others,” she says.

An expert panel including an insurance advocate, engineer and a quantity surveyor will answer questions throughout the evening.  Members of the panel will speak to topics such as managing insurance going forward, faulty foundation repairs, the role of MBIE and consenting matters.

The two keynote speakers are lawyers - Dr Duncan Webb from Lane Neave and Peter Woods from Anthony Harper. Dr Webb will discuss topics such as to what does a land claim look like, the process and how to take a strategic approach towards a solution.  He will provide opinion on the use of techniques such as ILV, jacking and packing and the cost to repair land.  Dr Webb will touch on cross lease issues and retaining walls.

Mr Woods will discuss standard of repairs, issues for claimants with EQC, inordinate delay, the process when deadlock with EQC, faulty repairs and the process to follow to in this situation.

Both will touch on what to do post cash settlements, including what the homeowner’s responsibilities are to repair, implications for future insurance and responsibilities when selling or renting a home that has been cash settled.
