Thomas Steams Into His 70th Year with Spectacular Life-Sized Birthday Cake!

A life-sized replica cake containing over 14,000 eggs and 300kg of flour has been unveiled to mark the 70th birthday of Thomas.

The giant cake, which is three metres long, one and a half metres high, and weighs over one tonne, was created to celebrate the 70 years of friendship and fun that Thomas has brought to boys and girls in New Zealand and around the world.

With over 14,000 eggs, 300kg of flour, sugar and cocoa, and 400 kilos of chocolate in the mixture, the spectacular and delicious Thomas cake is delighting fans at Melbourne’s Flinders Street Station.

Created by Christopher Montebello, founder of bakery Let Them Eat Cake, the impressive replica tank engine is one of the many ways Thomas & Friends™ is marking this special birthday.

The gigantic cake was made in pieces at the Melbourne bakery, before being assembled at the train station ready to delight young fans, some of whom came along with birthday cards for their favourite friend Thomas.

John Louie, Mattel Vice President and Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand, said Thomas continues to run on maximum steam as he celebrates this milestone year entertaining and engaging children.

“As the first best friend for many young children, Thomas is just as relevant today as he was when he was first introduced in the UK in 1945. Thomas has made many friends and has been on countless adventures over the years and today’s event and the festivities happening here until March 10, are fitting for the magic Thomas has brought into so many millions of lives,” says Louie.

The incredible Thomas & Friends™ cake was unveiled by veteran Australian television personality Bert Newton, who transformed into The Fat Controller for the occasion.

“I’m thrilled to be involved, dressed as none other than The Fat Controller! And what a way to celebrate such an icon with this marvellous cake extravaganza!” says Bert, who has been a fan for many years. “Thomas has brought joy to my own children’s lives and now my grandchildren and I’m honoured to be part of today’s celebrations.”
